About Mondulkiri
Mondulkiri
(in Khmer: មណ្ឌលគិរី, UNGEGN: Môndôlkĭri, ALA-LC: Maṇḍalagirī), meaning “Center of Mountains,” is a province (khaet) located in Cambodia. It shares borders with Kratié to the west, Stung Treng to the northwest, Ratanakiri to the north, and Vietnam to the east and south. Despite being Cambodia’s largest province by land area, it is the least densely populated. Mondulkiri was officially formed in 1961, carved out from the eastern section of Kratié province, with Senmonorom as its capital.

The kouprey, Cambodia’s national wild ox, serves as the province’s emblematic animal.

Created by King Norodom Sihanouk’s decree in 1960, Mondulkiri saw Senmonorom established as its capital in 1962. During the late 1960s Vietnam War, the province hosted three bases of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, leading to several US military incursions and bombings. Around 1970, the area fell under Khmer Rouge control. The regime forcibly relocated much of the population to Koh Nhek district to work on rice plantations, destroying schools, hospitals, and villages in the process. Tragically, about half of the province’s residents perished during these forced displacements in the 1970s.

The indigenous Bunong people have inhabited the region for approximately 2,000 years, though historical records before French colonization in 1864 are limited. Like many others, the Bunong were displaced during the Khmer Rouge era but were allowed to return to their ancestral lands in the 1980s.
