About O Smach
O Smach (អូរស្មាច់), pronounced Or Smăch (ʔou.smac), is a small but strategically important town located in Samraong Municipality, Oddar Meanchey Province, in northern Cambodia. It sits directly on the international border with Thailand, adjacent to the Thai town of Chong Chom in Surin Province. O Smach is positioned at the northern terminus of National Road 68, which branches off from National Highway 6 at Kravanh in Siem Reap Province, making it a key gateway between Cambodia and Thailand.
Historically, O Smach and its surrounding area were heavily affected by conflict and instability. Until 1999, the region was unsafe due to the ongoing presence and control of the Khmer Rouge, who had their last stronghold nearby in Anlong Veng. After the Khmer Rouge surrendered, peace gradually returned, and in 2003 an official international border crossing was opened between O Smach and Chong Chom, facilitating legal trade and travel.
One of the distinctive features of O Smach is the strip of casinos situated between the Cambodian and Thai passport control counters. This unique setup allows Thai nationals and other foreigners to gamble legally in Cambodia without having to pass through full Cambodian immigration procedures. Since gambling is illegal in Thailand but permitted in Cambodia for foreign passport holders, many Thai visitors come to O Smach for this purpose. This casino strip has spurred economic activity, with the development of casino hotels and markets catering to cross-border visitors.
The geography of O Smach is defined by the escarpment of the Dângrêk Mountains, which forms most of Cambodia’s northern border with Thailand. A natural mountain pass at O Smach has long served as an important route for travel and trade, linking the lowlands of Cambodia to the Khorat Plateau region of Thailand. During the Cambodian Civil War and until the late 1990s, the area was a center for illicit timber trade controlled by the Khmer Rouge, contributing to its instability.
Following the opening of the border crossing, O Smach’s economy diversified beyond gambling. The town and its Thai counterpart have developed customs facilities to support international trade. The primary Cambodian export through O Smach is cassava, an important agricultural product. Additionally, there is a robust market for second-hand bicycles imported from Japan, which are sold across the border to Thai buyers in Chong Chom. Cambodia also imports used farm machinery such as tractors and trucks, along with construction materials and petroleum products, through O Smach.
Despite being the least busy Cambodian-Thai border checkpoint, O Smach plays a crucial role in cross-border commerce and legal gambling activities. Its development reflects the broader economic integration and improving stability in the region, connecting Cambodia’s northern provinces with Thailand and beyond.
