About Kratie
Kratie (in Khmer: ក្រចេះ, Krâchéh “krɑˈceh”), also spelled Kracheh or Kraches, is a northeastern province of Cambodia. It shares borders with Stung Treng to the north, Mondulkiri to the east, Kampong Thom and Kampong Cham to the west, and Tboung Khmum and Vietnam to the south.
The provincial capital is the town of Kratie, situated within Kratie Municipality.
Historically, this region was part of the early Kingdom of Funan during the first millennium until it was absorbed by the Chenla Kingdom in the 6th century. The ancient Royal Capital of Sampheak Borak from the Chenla period is located in Sambo District. Kratie is also home to Vihear Sasar Muayroy Pagoda, built in the 16th century, which is linked to the famous Khmer legend of Krapeur Nen Thun (the Venerable Monk Thun, the Crocodile). The province contains several 8th-century temples such as Khvas Pi, Pram, and Koh Kring, featuring ancient deities, historic halls, traditional Khmer houses, and French colonial architecture. The Mekong River area near Kratie was among the most densely populated regions in Cambodia during the pre-Angkorian era.
In 1945, Lon Nol served as the governor of the province. Kratie witnessed intense conflicts during the Vietnam and Cambodian Civil Wars, including the Vietnamese intervention against the Khmer Rouge. It was heavily affected by Operation Menu, the 1969-1970 U.S. bombing campaign targeting Vietnamese supply lines in Cambodia and Laos. Since the mid-2000s, efforts to clear unexploded bombs and landmines have been a significant focus in the region.
On December 30, 1978, Vietnamese troops captured Kratie during their campaign against the Khmer Rouge.
