About Poipet
Poipet (Khmer: ប៉ោយប៉ែត, pronounced paojpaet) is a rapidly growing town located on the Cambodian-Thai border within Poipet Municipality, Banteay Meanchey Province. It serves as a vital border crossing between Cambodia and Thailand and is widely known as a popular gambling hub, especially since gambling is mostly prohibited in Thailand but permitted here for foreigners.
The town lies directly next to Aranyaprathet, its Thai counterpart across the border. Poipet’s establishment is relatively recent, created primarily to facilitate cross-border trade, whereas nearby Sisophon was historically the main urban center in this mostly agricultural region. According to census data, Poipet’s population surged from 43,366 in 1998 to 89,549 in 2008, making it the fourth-largest urban area in Cambodia—larger than Sisophon, the provincial capital, and even surpassing Sihanoukville in size.
Poipet is the terminus of Cambodia’s railway network. Plans to reconnect the rail line between Poipet and Sisophon were proposed in 2006, with an Australian firm slated to carry out the restoration. In 2009, Thailand passed laws to extend their rail network from Aranyaprathet to Poipet, and by 2018, the railway line was reactivated.
On December 22, 2022, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced ongoing studies for high-speed rail projects to link Phnom Penh with Preah Sihanouk province and the Thai border, aiming to improve domestic and international connectivity.
Between the Cambodian and Thai immigration checkpoints, there is a corridor of casinos and hotels allowing foreign visitors—particularly Thai nationals—to gamble in Cambodia without officially entering the country. While gambling remains illegal for Cambodian citizens, it is permitted for foreigners holding non-Cambodian passports. Travelers must pass through another border checkpoint on the Cambodian side before freely accessing the rest of the country.
Tragically, on December 28, 2022, a fire broke out at the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino, resulting in 27 fatalities and many injuries.
