5 Day Classic Angkor Experience + Remote Temples & Villages

Day 1: Angkor Wat Sunrise, Angkor Thom & Sunset at Phnom Bakheng
Your adventure begins with an early morning visit to Angkor Wat, where you’ll witness the sun rising over the temple’s iconic silhouette. Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II. Its five towers, symbolizing Mount Meru (the center of the universe in Hindu mythology), are surrounded by a massive moat.

After sunrise, explore the detailed bas-reliefs that depict scenes from Hindu mythology, including the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Your guide will explain the historical and spiritual significance behind each carving, offering a deeper understanding of Khmer culture and religion.

Next, visit Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Enter through the impressive South Gate, lined with statues of gods and demons. Visit the Bayon Temple, known for its 216 giant stone faces that gaze serenely from the temple's towers. Stroll through the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, where detailed carvings of royal ceremonies and mythological creatures line the ancient walls.

Conclude the day with a climb to Phnom Bakheng, a hilltop temple that offers one of the most breathtaking sunset views over Angkor Wat and the surrounding jungle.

Day 2: Ta Prohm, Preah Khan & Grand Circuit Exploration
Start your day with a visit to Ta Prohm, famous for its hauntingly beautiful appearance. The temple has been left largely unrestored, with massive fig and silk-cotton tree roots entwining the stone structures. This creates an atmospheric, almost mystical feeling, as nature seems to reclaim the temple.

Next, explore Preah Khan, a sprawling monastic complex that once served as a Buddhist university and monastery. Preah Khan's corridors and sanctuaries are filled with intricate carvings and hidden shrines.

Continue to Neak Pean, a small island temple surrounded by a reservoir, believed to have been used for healing purposes. Its unique cruciform design and central sanctuary reflect ancient Khmer water symbolism.

End the day at Pre Rup, a mountain temple known for its warm reddish glow at sunset. Climb to the upper terraces for panoramic views of the surrounding rice fields and countryside.

Day 3: Banteay Srei & Phnom Kulen (Sacred Mountain)
Travel to Banteay Srei, often referred to as the "Jewel of Khmer Art." Built from pink sandstone, this small temple is famous for its exquisite carvings depicting Hindu mythology. The delicate details and intricate bas-reliefs are considered some of the finest in Cambodia.

Afterward, head to Phnom Kulen, a sacred mountain and the birthplace of the Khmer Empire. Visit the River of a Thousand Lingas, where hundreds of Shiva Lingas are carved into the riverbed. Take a refreshing swim at the Kulen Waterfalls, surrounded by lush forest. Visit the nearby reclining Buddha statue at Preah Ang Thom, carved from a massive sandstone boulder.

Day 4: Beng Mealea & Kompong Khleang Floating Village
Explore Beng Mealea, a mysterious temple complex hidden in the jungle. Its sprawling layout, partially collapsed galleries, and overgrown vines create an adventurous atmosphere. Beng Mealea was a prototype for Angkor Wat and retains an untouched, wild charm.

In the afternoon, visit Kompong Khleang, one of the largest and most authentic stilted villages on Tonle Sap Lake. Take a boat ride through the village and observe daily life as locals fish, repair nets, and tend to floating gardens. The stilt houses rise high above the water during the wet season, creating a fascinating and photogenic scene.

Day 5: Koh Ker & Preah Vihear
Embark on a trip to Koh Ker, a remote temple complex that was once the capital of the Khmer Empire. Climb the massive 7-tiered pyramid of Prasat Thom for sweeping views of the surrounding jungle. Visit Prasat Pram, where tree roots dramatically entwine the temple walls.
Continue to Preah Vihear, a mountain temple perched on the cliffs of the Dangrek Mountains near the Thai border. Preah Vihear is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its breathtaking views and well-preserved carvings depicting Hindu epics.
