About Koh Kong
Koh Kong (កោះកុង), pronounced Kaôh Kŏng, is a province located in the southwestern part of Cambodia, with its capital city being Khemarak Phoumin, also called Koh Kong.
As the country’s southwesternmost province, Koh Kong features an extensive and mostly untouched coastline, alongside mountainous and heavily forested areas. These include sections of the Cardamom Mountains, which host Cambodia’s largest national park, Botum Sakor, as well as parts of Kirirom National Park.
The province is home to the large-scale Dara Sakor development, a joint Sino-Cambodian project covering about 45,000 hectares. This development aims to include casinos, golf courses, resorts, and a deep-water port stretching 20 kilometers, intended for cruise ships and cargo vessels. Close to this port is an airstrip with a 3,400-meter runway—longer than typical commercial runways—but its turning areas are too small for large civilian planes.
Due to these characteristics, some experts believe the Dara Sakor project might serve dual purposes, both civilian and military, potentially enabling the Chinese navy to use the facilities as a strategic base. However, Prime Minister Hun Sen has rejected such claims, pointing out that Cambodia’s constitution does not allow foreign military bases within its borders.
