About Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh, the capital and largest city of Cambodia, has served as the nation’s political and cultural heart since the era of the French protectorate. Over time, it has developed into Cambodia’s main hub for economy, industry, and culture.

Originally replacing Angkor Thom as the capital of the Khmer Empire, Phnom Penh was later abandoned several times before being officially reinstated as the capital by King Norodom in 1865. While it once operated as a center for industries like textiles, pharmaceuticals, machinery, and rice milling, the city has long been known for its cultural significance. Among its major institutions are the Royal University of Phnom Penh (founded in 1960 as the Royal Khmer University), offering programs in engineering, fine arts, technology, and agricultural sciences, with the latter based in Chamkar Daung. The city is also home to the Royal University of Agronomic Sciences and the Agricultural School of Prek Leap.

Dubbed the “Pearl of Asia” during the early 20th century for its elegant French colonial and Art Deco architecture, Phnom Penh remains one of Cambodia’s key tourist destinations alongside Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. Established in 1372, the city became Cambodia’s capital in 1434 after the decline of Angkor, lost that status in 1497, and regained it under French colonial rule in the mid-19th century. Many colonial-era buildings still stand today, especially along the city’s wide boulevards.

Located at the confluence of the Tonlé Sap, Mekong, and Bassac Rivers, Phnom Penh is home to over 2 million residents, accounting for around 14% of Cambodia’s population. The Greater Phnom Penh metropolitan area includes neighboring Ta Khmau and parts of Kandal province.
