About Battambang
Battambang (Khmer: បាត់ដំបង, UNGEGN: Bătdâmbâng “ɓatɗɑmɓɑ”) is the capital of Battambang Province and the third-largest city in Cambodia. Rich in history and cultural charm, the city was founded in the 11th century during the Khmer Empire and has long been known as Cambodia’s leading rice-producing province.

From 1795 to 1907, Battambang was under Siamese rule as a provincial capital of Inner Cambodia, yet the population remained primarily Khmer, with a vibrant mix of Vietnamese, Lao, Thai, and Chinese communities. Today, Battambang continues to serve as a vital regional hub, connecting northwest Cambodia to Phnom Penh and Thailand.

The city sits gracefully along the Sangkae River, a peaceful waterway that winds through the province, enhancing the city's scenic charm. One of Battambang’s unique features is its well-preserved French colonial architecture, offering some of the finest examples in the country, adding character to its historical streets.

Recognizing its cultural richness, the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts are currently preparing to nominate Battambang to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of Gastronomy. This initiative highlights the city’s culinary traditions and community-driven food culture. Other cities like Kratie, Siem Reap, and Kampot are expected to follow in the 2025 nomination cycle.

Battambang is more than a destination—it’s a harmonious blend of heritage, art, gastronomy, and tranquility, waiting to be discovered.
